Thailands Annual Water War Mirrors a Wild Era
Bangkok is a danger zone this weekend. Many foreigners flee. Middle-class Thais stay cautiously in their homes. The usually gridlocked streets are strangely empty -- except for roving bands of armed youths. They are armed with water: buckets, pails, high-powered hoses, water bombs, squirt guns, water rifles, portable pumps and vats of ice. They - By SETH MYDANS

What could be 10 interesting questions about Thai SONGKRAN festival ?
What could be 10 interesting questions about Songkran festival for a statistics group presentation. Could you tell me the website if you know one.
Answer: I would love to contribute a few: - How many people do actually know the history / symbolic meaning behind the festival? - What does water throwing represent? - How has it changed since the ancient day to now (now, Songkran is a pretty much occasion for you to get drunk and play with waters as opposed to the past when family members get together to pay respect to the elderly - lots of fun but a bit sad though)
What date will SONGKRAN start and end in Phuket?
I am going to be in Thailand for Songkran for the first time this year. I would like to know how long the water fighting goes on for. I would also like to know if a lot of Thai people leave Phuket and travel home for Songkran? i have read that this is the case.
Answer: Songkran festival is held during the hottest month of the year in Thailand. It is a 3-day festival usually set to April 13 up to April 15. People are throwing buckets of water on each other (also on strangers) during the festival. The water fighting usually starts on the first day (but you'll not see much water-throwing going around). On the second day, there will be more. But on the third day (last day), it will be on full-blast with almost all people participating. The Songkran festival is always a non-working public holiday. Most offices and businesses are closed during this 3-day period. So, most people working in the city usually go to their hometowns in the provinces. This is particularly true in Bangkok (where the city becomes virtually like a ghost-town, with few people on the streets and few cars on the road during this period). Many people from Bangkok travel southward to places like Pattaya, Hua-Hin, Samui, Phuket to spend their holidays there. Many people also travel northward to Sukkhotai, Chiang Mai (where they have the biggest Songkran festival), Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son. Many people also travel northeast to the Issan provinces (Udon Thani, Kalasin, Roi-et, Ubon Ratchatani, Nongkai). As to your last question, it must be the other way around. Phuket will have a lot more people coming in for Songkran than people coming out (this includes Thai people as well).
does anyone know or celebrate this --its the Thai new yr. If so, what do you like best???

SONGKRAN in Phuket - How to stay dry?
I will be in Phuket for Songkran (spent the event there before know what its like) but I have my family coming & wondering where they can stay to keep out of the wet - Can you stay in resorts & keep dry?
Answer: Just plan on getting wet at some time. So wear clothes that will not be damaged by water. Keep your mouth shut if a bucket of water is coming your way - no telling what is in that water! Wrap wallets, electronics and anything you do not want damaged in plastic or leave it at your hotel. It is a holiday where throwing water is traditional! So best to be prepared! Later in the evening things die down a little. Early in the morning sometimes "things" are just starting up. The afternoon and early evening can be very wet! There is no throwing of water in stores, restaurants, malls, hotel lobbies, hotel rooms, movie theaters, some enclosed bars do not allow water throwing. Beer bars, open to the weather and everything else can get a little wet. Some fancy resorts may limit some of the water throwing. But if you venture into the city areas, especially around bar areas, you will probably get wet. So dress accordingly! Do You Think That SONGKRAN Festival Celebration Affect Flights and Bus Schedule in Thailand?
I heard that Songkran festival is a big holiday
Would you guys give suggestions for traveling around Thailand on this period?
Big thanks in advance :)
PS : sorry for my bad English
Answer: Songkran is officially on 13-15, April, the 13th is on a Tuesday this year so many people will be taking the entire week off and some places will celebrate all during the week. Avoid traveling by bus on the weekend before and the weekend after, although if you book a flight somewhere you should be okay. Most Thais return to their home cities or villages, the exodus from Bangkok to provinces all over the country is enormous, the roads can be packed in some directions. On the weekend after Songkran, the opposite is true. It's best not to travel if you can avoid it, but before and after the weekends of the Songkran week might not be too bad. It's also a good time to stay put, Chiang Mai has one of the biggest celebrations and if you want to participate. is a good place to be. Bangkok is relatively quiet, as millions of people leave, but there are still plenty of places to celebrate and it's easier than any other time of the year to get around.

How did the water fight activites of the SONGKRAN festival in Thailand come about?
I am there now, soaked and wet wondering why? Can someone enlighten me? I understand its the Thai new year, but whats up with the Water Fights? Its fun!, I am having a blast!!
Answer: It treditionally means that water will wash away bad luck. But nowaday it's also for fun and cool down in this boiling weather moment. Everyone look forward for Songkran Day. Other than water fights, it's an occasion for family reunion. People pay their respects to the elders by pouring scented water over the palms of the elders' hands. The elders in return wish the youngsters good luck and prosperity. Yeah, I love Songkran! It's great to water fight with people. In water fights, seems like everybody are friends! does the water fighting last all day and night at SONGKRAN?
i am going to phuket for Songkran. i have never been to thailand for Songkran before? i was wondering if the water throwing lasts all day and night or just the daytime?
Answer: I was in northern thailand last year for Songkran and the water fights can be whenever and they last for about 2 weeks. Expect to get soaked walking down the street, riding a bike or even on a bus. However I found that in most cases people were quite respectful if it looked like you were carrying something valuble or you were in your best clothes. It's all in good fun and through the day you will dry in no time. Where I was the water throwing stoped once the sun went down because it was not warm enogh to dry afterwards but it may be different depending where you are. Just take plenty of small plastic bags for your camera and phone etc., expect to get wet and make sure you throw the water back and join in the fun!

Cheapest air and hotel in Pattaya For SONGKRAN?
I will go To LOS next year and want to be there during Songkran. Any advice?
Answer: Songkran is very exciting and alot of fun. My advice is you get to Pattaya before Songkran starts. The days before and during Songkran are a nightmare on the road. Insane amount of traffic and also 1000s of road accidents and deaths. This year alone more than 150 were dying a day on the roads during Songkran. Thai's do not have the same culture and education we have regarding drunk driving and road rules so it becomes extremely dangerous to travel during this period. Get to Pattaya a few days before Songkran starts. If you want a cheap hotel I suggest you look for accommodation on LK Metro. It is a nice area and offers cheap guesthouse accommodation. There is also cheap accommodation further back towards 3rd Road however LK Metro is a much nicer area to stay for a similar price. Here is an example of an LK Metro Gueshouse. There are plenty more like this one so don't worry about booking ahead if you don't have to. You will find a room. http://3sompattaya.com/Index.html I cannot advise you on the cheapest air as you have not stated where you will be flying from or your travel dates. Hope I was helpful.

Will places for shopping be open during SONGKRAN in Bangkok?
Going to Thailand and I will be in Bangkok over Songkran, I wanted to do some shopping during that time. Will that be possible?
Will shops, markets be open?
Should I be concerned that my new purchases will be destroyed by water/ talcum powder?
and restaurants/ bars/ clubs will they be open during Songkran?
Answer: generally Songkran isnt a huge thing in Bangkok, so there will not be any problems with shopping getting wet. If you are overly concerned just take a plastic bag out with you so you can double bad things. I went about the same time last year. saw nothing in Bangkok. Also went to pattaya and got wet through several times but with it being so hot its wasnt ever a problem. Just a tip though, if you go out during this time wear clothes that dry easily and wear things that you are not really concerned about getting dirty/wet/covered with talc restaurants/ bars/ clubs generally will have ppl outside with water pistols and the like but nothing inside will be allowed. But once again in Bangkok you will find it hard to find anywhere that does it. Venture out to the coast to see it in all its glory. Its just one huge water fight. Get a water pistol and have some fun. Wish i was coming with you!
