SINGAPORE: A waterspout has been spotted from the eastern parts of Singapore.
Most callers to the MediaCorp News Hotline reported seeing what looked like a tornado or a twister over the sea.
Most said they saw the phenomenon at about 2.30pm and that the phenomenon lasted about 15 minutes.
Witnesses said it was moving in a circular motion.
The waterspout could be seen in several areas including Chai Chee, East Coast Park, Suntec City and Potong Pasir.
Last August, a waterspout was also spotted off the coast of Sentosa Island.
The National Environment Agency (NEA) said intense thunderstorms were the cause of the phenomenon.
The waterspout is a narrow column of water that is sucked to the base of a cloud, making it look like a funnel.
An average diameter of a waterspout is 50 metres and it has average wind speeds of up to 150 kilometres per hour.
The NEA added that waterspouts will dissipate rapidly near the coast.
It also clarified that waterspouts are not rare as there are actually several sightings each year.
Answer: Waterspouts are quite common, and quite spectalur to see I must add. They're normally 2 Kilometers in width, and much weaker then their land counterparts. They mostly appear in moisture-laden enviroments with very little vertical wind shear, such as land breezes. Although some of these waterspouts can be very devasting and just as powerful as their land counterparts.

Some ppl say that those food outlets with the grade B from NEA have better food than those with A graded.True?
Singapore NEA (National Environment Agency) has graded all the food outlets (foodcourts, restaurants etc.) with A, B, C based on their hygiene. Usually the stall with a B or C will have good food.. is that true?
Answer: It has nothing to do with the food quality. They paid to get to grade A so they have to cast the fees on customer. That is why their food has the taste of a C but price of an A+
Otherwise, the ppl who grade the food has the very high anti-social taste, somewhat similar to those who award Oscar Best movie

Kitchen Exhuast system- F&B shophouse (singapore)?
Hi, can anybody help me on this issue. For a F&B business in a shophouse, singapore, let say a seating capacity of about 8-10 table. For the kitchen, we need to install a kitchen ventilation system. As i know shophouses in sg is about 3 storey high,
1) for such a space , what standard required bhp must the fan motor be? ( maybe for deep frying and cooking purposes)
2) roughly how much can the whole system etc... motor and hub extended to 3 storey high be? Newly or used type.
As i do check with the Nea and contractor , they will first ask me what is my shop space.
As i am still planing with my funds, i do not have a shop yet.
Thus, they often do not wish to reply me .
** can anyone advise me about the price, roughly.
Thanks
Answer: I'm sorry, I am not sure what you mean. I hate to do this, but may I suggest looking at Wikipedia or eHow.com? They usually have good, detailed information about this type of thing.

I know Singapore likes to give license and accreditations to many trades. But why is it they do not review all?
those who wants to be hawkers and who want to cook and sells them. Do the hawkers in the hawker centres go for classes on nutrition, hygience, even food processing.
Why is it that everyone who wants be to be driver goes for driving class and get a license. Everyone who wants to be a professional in their trades have to go get a license. Why not a hawker?
They cook our food that we eat daily and whose food we eat with trust and without questions.
Should not NEA make them and those who wants to be a hawker in the hawker centres go thru some sort of course and get some accreditation.
Answer: I guess when it comes to taste, it's personal. But since they're dealing with food, hygiene is of utmost importance.
NEA can only help ensure that hygiene standards are met, but the funny thing is that I don't think they check whether hawkers wash vegs properly, because many a time, I've seen hawkers chopping vegs straight out of their newspaper wrappers! Is it acceptable, my fellow Singaporeans?
Food these days is tasteless and prepared by people whose sole purpose is to make a profit. If you find something tasty, you'll return, otherwise, you'll never go back. I guess that's the best "review" that we can get at the moment.

SMRT noises: Are you affected? And what can you do?
In a densely built-up Singapore, many residents are living next to MRT tracks. The noise generated by the trains is very disturbing. Many people have raised concerns, due to sleepless nights and disturbances to rest and sleep.
The noise interferes with sleep in a number of ways like causing a person to awaken repeatedly, resulting in poor sleep quality as well as other impacts. It also alters sleep pattern by causing sleep to change from heavier to lighter sleep. It reduces the percentage and total time in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. The noise affects slow wave sleep, increase body movement and change cardiovascular responses. Subjected to 45 decibels of noise, the average person cannot sleep.
These affect mood and performance the next day and have adverse longer term effects.
The train noise level at the affected areas is typically above 60 dB (allowed by NEA), very much above the healthy limit (about 30-35 dB) recommended by WHO and values adopted by First World countries.
It seems that train noise level in Singapore is a problem that we have to live with.
Let us look at how Singapore compares to other First World countries.
SINGAPORE:
NEA regulation : http://app2.nea.gov.sg/circular_19950814.aspx
Noise limit: 67 dBA (Leq 1 hour)
AUSTRALIA:
NSW Government, Australia, Department of Planning: Clauses 87 (Rail) and 102 (Road):
If the development is for the purpose of a building for residential use, the consent authority must be satisfied that appropriate measures will be taken to ensure that the following LAeq levels are not exceeded:
- in any bedroom in the building : 35dB(A) at any time 10pm–7am
- anywhere else in the building (other than a garage, kitchen, bathroom or hallway): 40dB(A) at any time
Noise limit: 35 dBA (Leq 1 hour)
UNITED KINGDOM AND EUROPEAN UNION:
Refer to: BRITISH STANDARD (CODE OF PRACTICE) BS8233-1999: Sound insulation and noise reduction for buildings
Table 5:
Typical situations Design range LAeq,dB
Good / Reasonable
Reasonable resting/sleeping conditions
Living rooms 30 / 40
Bedrooms 30 / 35
Noise limit: 30 to 35 dBA (Leq 1 hour)
In UK, the train companies even pay the affected residents for the cost of sound-proofing their house.
There are many ways to sound proof a room. Similarly, there are many ways to reduce the train noise:
Eg: 1. installation of screen walls along track
2. add more sound absorbents on the rails and tracks
Answer: I'm sorry if you're affected by the MRT noise. Aside from the MRT, noise can also come from expressways and major roads which residential buildings are next to.
How my family deals with it is by sleeping using air conditioning. In a sense by sealing up the room, we keep out and/or reduce most of the vehicle transient noises. Granted running an air conditioner through the night can be expensive, however a good nights rest every night over a lifetime is priceless.
To keep our electricity bill down, we use an energy efficient air conditioner (4-ticks) and clean it's filters regularly (monthly). My whole family sleeps in the master bedroom (2 adults and 1 child), we adjust the temperature to as high as it would be comfortable (~25°C), use the sleep function (increases temperature by 2°C after 2 hours), and set the off-timer to 5:00am. I typically rise shortly after as the room warms up, just to open the windows to let the cool morning air in and returning to bed till 7:00am.
Alternatively, you could let your MP know the problem at the "Meet-the-People Session" for your constituency. If you're not shy at meeting others, canvas your neighborhood to see if the noise affects other residents in or around the vicinity of your block; perhaps you can rally them together or have some hard data before meeting your MP.
