Is there a maximum amount you can withdraw from IRAS at age 71 without penalties?
My husband wants to cash in two Iras that are earning very low interest. He will use the money for buying a house to fix up for rental. Would it be best to do this or to take out the minimum amount and cash in regular CDs which have not matured?
Also, does the date the Iras were purchased matter? Other smaller Iras were combined with these about a year ago - could that be a problem?
Thanks for your help!
Answer: There is a minimum amount he must draw out after reaching age 70 1/2. It is called the required minimum distribution. If you don't take out at least that amount, you are subject to a tax penalty of 50% of what you should have taken out. For example, say the RMD table says you were supposed to take out 5% of a $100,000 IRA (or $5,000) but you only take out $1,000. You will have to pay a penalty of 50% of the $4,000 difference, or $2,000.
Any money you take out of these is taxed as ordinary income, and could make your social security payments subject to taxes as well.
I personally would take the minimum amount (to meet the IRS requirement and minimize my taxes without penalties). To do the rest of the financing, don't cash in unmatured CD's - too much penalty there. Instead, get a conventional mortgage, or take a loan out against the CDs (called a secured loan) in which you pay 2% or so above the rate the CDs pay. Then when the CD's mature, you withdraw the funds and pay off the loan. If you are doing this as a rental business, you can deduct the cost of the loan against your Schedule E income.

Traditional IRAS: What is the maximum deposit I can make to my IRA in 2008?
For TRADITIONAL Iras (not Roth Iras), the maximum one can deposit into thier IRA is US$4,000.00 during year 2007 (exceptions for those over 50).

Are IRAS included in the value of the estate?
Are Iras included in the value of my estate for calcuating estate tax, if the beneficaries were my kids. Would it be different if it were rolled over to my spouses IRA. I realize they would be taxed when they make the required withrawals each year.
Answer: IRA's are taxable at the time when you get distributions from it. The person receiving the distributions reports it on their own 1040 for the year the money is received. For a spouse, the IRA can be rolled over into their own IRA or be treated as their own IRA but they can choose to treat it as inherited distributions taxed in the same way your kids would be. It's a choice based on the best tax advantage at the time of distribution. There is no additional estate tax on it, unless it is first doled out to the spouse and then doled out to the kids. [But technically, I just described a possible gift tax scenario.] Since estate tax is inheritance from a deceased person, the answer is no additional estate tax on the IRA. Just the income tax based on your own income... otherwise known as a tax penalty. More than one individual can inherit from an IRA. The IRS doesn't want to double tax you.

For Iras, ETRADE says there are no account fees and no minimums. The website also seems to indicate there are no charges for trading with money within the IRA. So how does ETRADE make money doing this?
Answer: There are trade commissions if you trade stocks, ETF's, or actual bonds. For mutual funds they get a portion of the annual expense ratio the fund charges, even if it has no load or transaction fee. The expense ratio is a small percentage already deducted out of historical returns, so you don't really see that amount directly. Answer: Traditional IRA
This works the opposite of a Roth-IRA. You get a current tax deduction in the year you put money in your IRA. However, every penny you have in your account is taxed when you spend it in retirement.
Annual contribution limit: $5,000 ($6,000 if age 50 or older)
Roth-IRA
Investors put in after-tax dollars that are never taxed again. When you retire, you take out all your money and whatever it has earned tax free.
Annual contribution limit: $5,000

Is it better to put more money in savings accounts now and less into IRAS?
Im 27, husband is 34. Were both going to start Iras. I dont know if its better to save more now and put less into Iras. We are halfway to reaching the goal amount for our emergency savings. We intend on going to grad school also. But, we are behind with retirement, so I wasnt sure if I should beef that up now and be okay with saving less each month.
Answer: The rule of thumb is to have the emergency saving in place first, then invest. How much do you really need in an emergency account? If you are halfway there and both of you have a secure job you might want to think about putting away up to the employer matching amount if either of you have a 401k that offers an employee match. Then add more slowly to your savings.
Do you have/need insurance?
Do you own a house?
You are behind on retirement so if there are ways you can cut back spending and invest more, that would be good.

I realize that i haven't answered your question. But you'd have had to supply the amount of time that it took for data taking somehow. It didn't image, so perhaps it swept the sky like HIPPARCOS. It sounds like a spherical math problem, but without enough parameters.
