OPINION; Ones A Crowd
MORE people live alone than at any other time in history. In prosperous American cities -- Atlanta, Denver, Seattle, San Francisco and Minneapolis -- 40 percent or more of all households contain a single occupant. In Manhattan and in Washington, nearly one in two households are occupied by a single person. By international standards, these numbers - Op-Ed article by sociology Prof Eric Klinenberg observes that more people live alone in America than at any time in history; argues that living alone comports with modern values, and also encourages socializing; predicts that living alone will become even more common in the future, at every stage of adulthood and in every place where people can afford a home of their own. What do I do with all my old Open University papers and books?
There were no Refuges for battered women in days gone by. I eventually escaped and rebuilt my life through the Open University study programme. Up at 5 am in the days prior to the Internet and videos to watch the lectures at weekends. I had a really interesting and well paid career but I have now retired.
I have no need for the essays and study materials but somehow I cannot bear to part with them.
Has anyone else had a similar experience?
How have you dealt with it?
Answer: I put all my college course work (History and English) along with my NVQ2 Health care folder in a plastic box and put it in the loft. The Maths and Science i threw out. All that hard work is worth looking at occasionally if only to think that it could have been improved on.
Well done for turning your life around.

The 21st Century Education
A PARADOX of American higher education is this: The expectations of leading universities do much to define what secondary schools teach, and much to establish a template for what it means to be an educated man or woman. College campuses are seen as the source for the newest thinking and for the generation of new ideas, as societys cutting edge. - Lawrence H. Summers is former president of Harvard University and former secretary of the Treasury. This essay is based on a speech Dr. Summers gave at The New York Timess Schools for Tomorrow conference. - By LAWRENCE H. SUMMERS

Im trying to open a powerpoint file on my computer, but my computer wont open it?
Im trying to open powerpoint lecture notes from one of my classes on my computer, but my computer wont open it because it is saying it is not a powerpoint file, but it is? Anyone know how I can get this file to open?
Answer: ok try to open it at school and then re-save the file in PDF format that will work. If that is not an option then the simplest thing would be to email lecturer and ask if they can send it to you in an alternative format.
Other then that do you have microsoft powerpoint installed on your computer - if you are using one of the non-Microsoftt alternatives then issues like this will arise. open-officee is the best non-Microsoftt alternative and is free so if you are really stuck then perhaps you could try that as a last resort but i would only try that as a last resort

How do you open windows (documents) in Microsoft Office 07 like tabs in Firefox?
Ive seen people in lecture opening multiple windows in tabs in Microsoft Word 2007 and I cant figure out how to do it. They appear coloured sometimes (the tabs), like in Excel 07 when you have multiple spreadsheets open at the same time.
They werent cascading windows, they were actual tabs.
Although the windows explorer option works, I want them all in Microsoft Word itself so I can alternate between them and work on them, not just look at them.
Answer: I've got your answer:
I used Windows Explorer (no firefox on this comp) but I'd assume it's the same with Firefox.
Open your browser. In the address bar, paste the location of the file you wish to open (For example, C:\My Documents\WordFile.doc) I tried this with both Word and Excel files and it worked.
You can open new tabs in the same window and repeat this process.
Hope this helps!
------------------------------------------------
Edit: Hm... not sure about that one. Are you sure they aren't using OneNote? I think you can do tabs with OneNote. It's usually included with your Office 2007 bundle, so if you did want to try that, you could create your documents in OneNote and then transfer them to Word or Excel when you're finished. Also, I'm not sure if you can do spreadsheets in OneNote..... sorry I couldn't help more!

HEADS UP; In Potsdam, a Time to Celebrate
IN the mid-1740s, Frederick the Great, king of Prussia, decided he needed a break from his bustling Berlin castle. Why were Al Gores lectures always not open to the public?
Gore only permitted invited people to his Global warming lectures. He wouldnt allow the general public or anyone in disagreement with him to enter the meeting. If one is truly interested in "debate" then one has to hear from BOTH sides of the issue. Not to mention the fact that Al Gore has absolutely no science background and that he is the founder of a multi billion dollar corporation that invests in green technology stocks. If one truly wanted to "save the earth" would you also try to profit from your claims? Wouldnt you want to save humanity for the sake of that cause alone? Is anyone else here smelling a rat?
Answer: I'm a liberal, and even I think Al Gore's full of horse sh*t.

How good is the arab open university?
is it for people who work and cant attend lectures or why is it called an open university?
AK-47 - Thank you very much for your answer but do you also know whether it is possible to pursue masters degree at any university after graduating from an open university?
Answer: yes its for working students as well as full time students. open university means that student is free to choose the required credit hours per semester which is not a case in regular university like u can choose 8 in semester or u can 16 while in regular uni if there r 20 Credit Hours so that's it student cant change and another major difference is reduced lectures which means in open universities there r few lectures compared to regular uni but that doesnt mean there will be no lectures in open uni.
i dont know what is reputation of arab open university in egypt but as i know its in many arab countries which is a plus point and u can receive degree from united kingdom open university while u graduate from arab open university which is another plus.
united kingdom open university is a high standard university and well known all over the world and is ranked 215 in world top universities and i think there isn't any university from egypt ranked below 300.
in conclusion arab open university is good.
EDIT: ur welcome, for masters only requirement is bachelors degree however some universities demand one year work experience along with bachelors degree. why not? every university in world accepts graduates from open universities for masters as well as phd. but keep in mind some very prestigious universities requires very good grades in bachelors like not below B+ and A in order to provide admission for masters degree..

Who takes online classes? What do you like or dislike? Are your lectures given on streaming video or podcasts?
Im just gathering info on online classes. Tell me how you like it. Do any of you have lectures offered on streaming video? Are there any campuses which I can log on to and view their streaming video for free? As in open university?
Id love to hear your opinion.
Answer: The online class I took had no supplemental material; just the tests, homework, and quizzes; no lectures. I found this to be nice, as I could study when I wanted without worrying about attendance. The downside, however, is that no-one will remind you about anything; you're completely responsible for everything. If you forget a quiz, too bad.
As for the others, I hear Phoenix has decent online classes.

Is there a place where you can find the old 1980s Open University programmes/lectures?
One of my friends, whos a little younger than me, has recently begun a course with the Open Univeristy in Britain, and I wanted to show her some of the programmes that were on TV in the UK in the dead of night when I was a kid. I remember coming home from nightclubs and seeing mad old professors with massive ties on ranting on about the French revolution or scalar equations or the monstrosity of the patriarchy and what not. It was the only telly that we had when we were coming down off speed and scopolamine, so you know, we watched it. It was kind of cool, actually. It was better than endless repeats of the dog whisperer or whatever. Who knows, maybe we even learnt something. I cant think what, and anyway, Im not here to judge and point fingers, Im here to learn. Hopefully without the scopolamine this time.
Anyway, is there anywhere that these things are archived? I tried YouTube, and there was either nothing there, or so much there that I coulnt find it - I guess the current students need the more recent stuff..
Help appreciated. Cheers.
Hi Persuations8 - of course I know what it means. Did you think I just picked letters at random from the air, lol? Do you know where I can find these old educational videos? Thanks again for help?
Answer: I too have fond memories of those old OU programmes shown in the dead of night. My favourites were the nuclear physicists writing out illegible formulae and causing explosions, whilst wearing a tank top and having a huge beard.
But anyway, the OU today does not rely on television. The OU expects students to have a PC. Some of the material is books, some of it is on DVD, and some of it is online. Most courses have a high coursework element, submitted electronically. The OU has its own You Tube channel and podcasts on the OU site and on iTunes. Television is obsolete now for the OU.
That said, the OU makes some great television programmes for the BBC, like Coast.
If you find any of those 1970s kipper ties, let me know.

How can I avoid falling asleep during Lectures?
So I have a problem, I keep falling asleep during lectures! I make sure to get a good nights sleep prior to the lecture, and try to avoid drinking the night before an important lecture. But still! Halfway through the lecture into the second hour, I cannot physically keep my eyes open for some reason! It seems to be at its worst after lunch.
Anyone know why this is? Is something wrong with me? Anything I can do to avoid this happening?
Thanks in advance!
Answer: I know how you feel!
I'm a freshmen in college and both my English class and Psychology class are so easy and boring! When the teachers are doing their lectures, I can't help but feel bored and tired.
I usually bring gum with me because even chewing it slightly helps you be awake. I always have a water bottle with me, too. I normally drink it every 10 minutes with little sips. I bring chapstick with me to put on my lips during the lecture. All this stuff really helps, surprisingly but I'm still unfortunately bored. You can also bring something else than water (like a Starbucks - you know, one of those you buy in the store in the glass bottle if you like coffee) or maybe some lemonade, tea, etc.
Also: I take notes and lots of them. I may not understand what the professor may be saying because I drift in and out of the lecture but note taking everything they say helps BECAUSE it makes you more interested in the class just by writing and you won't miss anything important.
And you can also adjust your seating position every 10 or so minutes by doing mini stretches or just shifting into a different position.
Chances are you think the class is boring or extremely easy. I'm the same way. I hope this helps! : )

Are there any other companies like The Teaching Company that sell recorded university lectures?
I know there is a lot of open courseware available online, but I was wondering if there are any other companies that record series of lectures professionally and on a variety of topics, like The Teaching Company does. I really enjoy their series but I am looking for more courses. I am unsure of how to search for such a thing, as "recorded lectures" yields results that are simply recorded live in a lecture hall, and these tend not to be as helpful as those aimed specifically at the home viewer.
Answer: Barnes & Noble has a "Portable Professor" series.
