Why did the Kuomintang party lose the election in 2000?

I know that the party has ruled Taiwan since the beginning of its government on the island but why did it suddenly lose the election of 2000? Was it because of President Lee or Vice-President Lian?
Answer: President Lee was (and still is) greatly admired for opening up the democratic voting process in Taiwan. He is held in high esteem among the people for his demostrated and sincere concern for the Taiwanese, even though the KMT turned their back on him for doing so. It's unfortunate that Ma Ying-jeou couldn't have taken a few pages from Lee's playbook when the KMT was restored to power in 2008, and used that to strenthen Taiwan's diplomatic position in the world community. Chen Shue-bian was elected because Lee wasn't running, and the people thought it would be a good idea to exercise their newfound right to change the leadership, and they made history in doing so. Unfortunately, Chen did not have the cooperation of the Executive Yuan (much like a US President having an opposition Congress, as has just occurred in recent the US elections). The occurences of this "balanced approach to political power" is often fraught with stagnation and the inability to make true pogress in addressing issues that the people as a whole would like solved. Due his strong stance as a patriot of the Taiwanese, Chen was given a second chance in 2004, but he still did not have a cooperative majority within the Executive Yuan.

Big election day in Taiwan. Wholl gain an advantage?

Saturday Dec 5th is a big election day in Taiwan. Is anyone willing to speculate on the outcome? Thanks for answering, 駱士基 I think we may be about to encounter widespread "voter apathy" here. HowJ: Very nice answer (and most likely true). Thanks. Burke: Political fundraising and mudslinging are the downside of democratic elections. Ive had several persons say they dont even want to vote this year, because all the candidates are so corrupt and unwrothy. Its a very sad thing to see this happen so quickly in such a young democracy. I dont have all the results yet, but the DPP took the Hualien Mayoral seat, and an independent took the Hualien County Magistrate position. DPP also took back Yi-Lan county, and held onto all other previously held counties. KMT got 47% of the popular vote (dropping from 53% in 2005).
Answer: There appears to be more reports of vote-buying in this year's election. I mean there's more this year that is being caught and reported. Vote buying and smear campaign have always been a problem in elections but it seems to be the center of attention this time. It's not even news anymore there's corruption. People know this for years. If there is more younger crowd returning back home to vote and participate I'm sure you can see a more fair result. Young voters aren't swayed by money and more independent minded. This is politics, same for every democratic nation with free elections. The smaller the number of voters the more apparent of this problem. It is easier manipulated as well. Lots of stunts like hair shaving and quitting current office position this year. Election is always good for a great show, but result is always real. Let's see how large of a voter turnout tomorrow. The more voter turn out the better DPP stands a chance that's what I see. It was interesting to see many KMT candidates not wanting to associate themselves with president Ma in this election. edit: so a day before the election gambling and betting odds began to surface. See that is another election tactic, a dirty one. Maybe there really isn't much gambling going on but just letting out the news that a certain candidate is favored affects the result. So both parties' chairmen(woman) will be in I-Lan tonight for the last day of campaigning. I-Lan is hottttt this time. It has been traditionally a DPP county but last time it went opposite to KMT. Ma is there for the 9th time that tells you how important it is and that KMT is not so confident they're going to win it. It may really be down to one single vote! oh the drama! News is reporting of large number of I-Lan residents returning home to vote. This is good -- showing that people are valuing their votes and understanding their participation counts. This is democracy at work! edit2: election result for the county and city mayors: KMT 12 seats, DPP 4 and 1 independent. DPP won a total of 45% of the votes across the nation. That is not bad. Most of the results were really close, especially that of Penghu County, KMT won by mere 600 votes. It would mean a loss to the KMT if they had less than 11 seats. At 12 that is what everybody expected. DPP won back I-Lan county. That is a victory for them because it was a turn around from a previously KMT county. Ma was in I-Lan more than 9 times for campaigning, and still lost. KMT must really be disappointed. Well Ma is got his butt covered -- he has stressed that the nomination for I-Lan candidate didn't come from him. He won't be fault for the loss. LOL by number of votes across the nation: KMT 48%, DPP 45% and Independent 7%.

Is election violence common in the democracy of Taiwan? What about Fridays shooting at the KMT rally?

One man was killed and another injured at a KMT election rally. Is this how democracy works in Taiwan?
Answer: Election violence is not that common in Taiwan, this is just something that is weird that has occured and it not common. I heard there was this country where their goverment used their tanks to simply roll over the people who are against them...hmmm...i wonder what country that is... 1) Sean Lien Was shot in the cheek and flew right out of the other side. 2) There was no blood markings on the ground during the whole incident 3) KMT wont release the tape they had at the incident, stating that the whole thing was "Too bloody". 4) The Doctor and nurses and the hospital states that Sean Lien is fine, and that he can eat now, and talk. Fishy? I think so, how can a person recover from a wound that fast, and be able to chew his food, when his mouth litterally has been shot? I feel that there is something that should be justified about this. Could KMT be putting up an act? Well there arnt enough facts to say so yet, so we will keep it at that. Also why would a man run on the stage to shoot? and not shoot at the bottom of the stage, where he could easily shoot and run away? Hmm...

Do you think there will be political violence during the Taiwan 2008 election?

some people are warning me about the Taiwan election and recommended me not to go there in Feb. to April 2008 when Im planning to be there with my 3 year old son. Whats your opinion? Do you think its unsafe to be there during election time with a kid? Thanks.
Answer: Dont worry about anything. We all worked during the protests that were held in designated areas after both earlier Elections . If there is any violence, it will be after the elections if the KMT lose again. They are spoilt sports. Anyway, they will gather around the Presidential Office area or get moved to a location near the Taipei Station. Most of the "violence" was staged at that time just before the Peak News hour. TAIWAN ELECTION: Your reaction?

The opposition candidate in Taiwans presidential election, Ma Ying-jeou, has won a clear victory. What will this mean for Taiwans future?
Answer: I am disappointed that DPP lost to KMT. Now, with KMT controlling the legislatative yuan and (now) presidential office and the executive yuan, KMT would have free rein to sell out to China. I am surprised that Mr. Hsieh did not do better. When he was mayor of Kaoshiung (second largest city in Taiwan), Kaoshiung improved. Can we say Ma improved the life in Taipei? A KMT victory I believe will have serious consequences for Taiwan and several steps back in terms of Taiwan's growing democracy. Ma is going to sell out Taiwan! Ma and his party will turn Taiwan into China's victim (like what China is doing to Tibet now) I am glad that DPP show more class than KMT. If KMT lost, I believe that they will just demand a recount. Do they not believe in the people's will? KMT demanded a recount even when it was evident that they lost. KMT is a party of sore losers.

What do u think about the result of 2008 President election in Taiwan?

Answer: I think Taiwan has probably bought some time ! The new fence rider will do everything to appease China, but that isn't always a good thing either, but it might take off the heat for now. Eventually China is going to attempt a takeover of Taiwan, and they know the US is commited to defending Taiwan in just such a case, so they will more than likely wait until we have thoroughly bogged ourselves down in yet another fracas, before they make an attempt to do this. They realize that Taiwan has defensive measures that would make aggression very expensive for the Chinese, with or without US involvement !

Will the assassination of Bhutto scenario be duplicated in Taiwan in its imminent cut-throat elections?

President of Taiwan once said he was advised to declare martial law (emergency status) in the upcoming elections under certain conditions. This was confirmed by its security bureau later. American prophetess (Elizabeth Fotinopoulos) once said the competing, promising candidate would be in danger -- his life is threanted. Why there are so many smears, riots, murders in developing countries elections? It seems Al Qaeda is a factor in this scenario, but more doubts about government authorities in it.
Answer: Doubtful. There are completely different social and political paradigms in place in Taiwan. You can call Taiwan a "developing nation," but the truth is that it's quite advanced economically and technologically compared to other developing nations. And unlike Pakistan, there isn't a resident radical movement like al Qaeda with the clout and resources needed to stage such an attack. Why are such attacks prominent in developing countries? Two reasons -- one is that developing countries have contingents that are still locked into a certain way of thinking that is contrary to societal progress. This thinking also undermines democracy, because it often seeks to solve political disputes the "old fashioned way" -- with violence instead of votes. That's why you also see coup d'etats in such nations -- they're seizing power without risking that an election might mess things up by selecting the other candidate. The other reason I'd cite is that terrorism is more prevalent worldwide, including in the western world. Aside from the big attacks (9/11, London subway and Madrid trains), consider the "lesser" attacks like the anthrax mailings in the U.S. Terrorists now realize that they can much more easily (and subversively) get their message across using bombs and chemicals. It's the same train of thought that I described above -- "Why solve things through elections when we can kill people instead?" It's a completely backward way of thinking, and it's completely cowardly, but that's how some very pitiful folks choose to operate -- even in the 21st century.

Answer: The election took place over the weekend. According to the Asia Times of January 15: "The Kuomintang (KMT) party won an unexpected landslide victory in Taiwan's legislative election at the weekend, giving this opposition party a major boost ahead of March's presidential election and forcing President Chen Shui-bian to accept his lame-duck status. "Benefiting from its decades-old control of factions at local levels and a new legislative election system, the KMT won 81 out of the 113 seats at stake, compared with the ruling Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) 27. The remaining five seats went to independent candidates, most of whom are KMT allies."

Once China becomes a democracy with party elections, would China immediately invade Taiwan and Singapore to?

get election votes?
Answer: That's what CCP (Chinese Communist Party) wants everyone to think. They are currently hiding a lot of historical facts from their citizens. They are also teaching extreme hatreds in their standard textbooks. Once China becomes a democracy, with multiple political parties, they will first need to deal with internal justice. The evil doers will need to face court trials. The historical facts will be restored. The victims will need to be compensated. Who will win the presidential election in Taiwan?

Answer: Three candidates are the front runners. Incumbent Ma, main opposition party leader Tsai and a new candidate Soong. Soong has ran for presidency in 2000 and vice presidency in 2004. He failed both times. President Ma recently made fun at him for "not taking the hint" when his campaign was announced. Incumbent Ma has a gradually declining approval rating since the day he took office back 2008. Inexperienced and unfit for the job, he faced difficulty leading the nation. Tsai is the first female presidential candidate for the highest political position in Taiwan. The latest polls puts her in the front of the pack.
